Fried pies recalled for stray chemical

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Business is busy at the Original Fried Pies Shop on NW 50th St. near Portland Ave. The pies are a tradition for many, but now word that the Oklahoma-based company is recalling nearly 9,000 pounds of frozen meat and poultry pie fillings.

The USDA said the fillings are being recalled because they contain Sodium Benzoate which was not listed on the packaging.

It also has not been approved as an additive in meat and poultry.

Angelique Hibbs is a Chiropractic Assistant and teaches patients holistic healing and nutrition.

She is not a fan of Sodium Benzoate.

"It is a preservative. It's a fungus static compound. It actually causes the bacteria and fungus to not be able to reproduce," she said.

As well as the Chicken Vegetable sauce, the recall involves three kinds of cheese sauces.

The products were produced between April 27 and this past Thursday, Oct. 20.

Hibbs said Sodium Benzoate is used in a number of things, but raises concerns.

"Some studies have shown it to cause problems in the DNA to definitely damage it in the mitochondria of your cells," she said.

We contacted The Original Fried Pies Company out of Davis who told us, "We are taking care of the problem and there is no damage. Our products have been replaced and our pies are as good as always."

There have been no illnesses related to this recall.
