"Dumpster dogs" reunite after 1 year | Community Spirit

One year ago today, workers at the Enid SPCA were horrified by a discovery they made beside a dumpster near the shelter. However, they say despite those horrible findings they are looking forward to the one year anniversary for a completely different reason.

Thursday, workers are creating goodie bags, compiling treats and ordering cake for this special event.

While heading to work last year, volunteers discovered eight dogs, who had been severely emaciated and abused, beside a dumpster near the Enid SPCA.

Seven dogs were packed into three small kennels and one dog was tied to a stake.

All of the animals were covered in fleas, many had severe skin sores and others were emaciated.

At the time, workers were optimistic about the dogs survival, but they also knew what could happen.

Vicki Fox, the director of the Enid SPCA, said at the time "There's only so much you can do for them."

After weeks of intensive care and workers fighting to save every little life, all of the dogs survived and eventually found loving homes.

Now Thursday, which marks one year to the day of their discovery, workers are preparing to be reunited with some of those pets.

Fox said after hearing some of the stories of recovery from the families who adopted the dogs, the workers were in tears.

They all wanted to see the animals who touched so many lives in a matter of a few weeks.

So the shelter organized a reunion of sorts for the dogs, the owners and, of course, the workers who spent countless hours helping the dogs in their struggle for survival.

Thursday evening at 7 p.m., the shelter will be overloaded with wagging tails and playful pups.

However, this time it is not because they are looking for a home, but rather a mere celebration that they have all already found the right one.
